Desert Driving
An early morning start to the day meant that we arrived at the border whilst all the border officials were having lunch.  Mauritanian hospitality prevailed and we joined the custom officers for a meal of rice and camel meat (all eaten with your right hand).  Greasy fingers later, we began the easy process of form completing and before long we had passed through all the tin huts on the Mauritanian border.

Debbie climbing the dune

Travelling along the imaginary GPS line we searched for a piste heading in the direction we wanted to go - which was directly to the coast bypassing all the local towns.  Mauritania only has 3 tar roads and the longest train in the world so travelling is all done on pistes.

Luca & Sameena - very experienced desert explorers and TV documentary makers gave us a helping hand with the art of desert and dune driving.  I did not always make it to the top of each dune and so once had to dig a little and ask for a push from the rest of the group.  By the way (btw) for the Landy enthusiasts the tyres are still set to normal road pressure because the terrain has been very rocky around the dunes. We have a long way to go so do not want to shred a tyre on any rocks.
